A Sediment Water Filter removes physical debris and impurities from your water. The sediment filter has tiny holes through which water can pass, while unwanted particles are blocked. As these particles come in different sizes, the filters also come in varying micron ratings. Generally, for visibly polluted water with larger particles, a sediment filter with a larger micron size (such as 20 or 50 microns) is recommended in the first stage to prevent clogging of subsequent filters.

This sediment filter is often the first filter installed in a Reverse Osmosis system, acting as a net to catch unwanted particles including sand, dirt, silt, rust, and other fine particles. Sediment filters are made of fine melted polypropylene, which is then blown and spun into a cylinder-like form. Polypropylene is resistant to chemical solvents, bases, and acids. Removing these particles allows other filters, such as Carbon Block or GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) filters, to perform better and last longer.

The Standard Activated Carbon Block filters are made of fine coconut shell carbon. They remove odors, undesirable colors, and unpleasant tastes of many organic compounds. These filters are also effective in removing chemicals like iron, manganese, chlorine, and hydrogen sulfide. By removing these unwanted byproducts, you can enjoy fresh and clean water. Since these filters are made of finely packed carbon (forming a cylinder block), they offer a much finer filtration of suspended particles and dirt.

Chlorine removal is where carbon excels, and nothing else equals carbon's ability to remove chlorine. Coconut shell carbon is becoming popular not only because it is made from a renewable resource but also because it produces very good tasting water and is particularly good at trihalomethane removal.

Besides physical absorption, the Activated Carbon Block filter also filters water via a chemical process. The filter is positively charged, enabling it to attract and capture negatively charged particles such as chlorine, benzine, and other volatile organic compounds.

These universal sediment filters and Activated Carbon Block filters are designed to fit most standard under-sink Reverse Osmosis water filtration units or any type of water filtration units with standard 10-inch housing. They are also suitable for use in Whole House Water Systems, Under Counter-top Water Filter Systems, and Counter-top Water Filter Systems, optimizing the performance and lifespan of the carbon or GAC filters.
