A Sediment Water Filter removes physical debris and impurities from your water. The sediment filter has tiny holes through which water can pass, but unwanted particles are trapped. As these particles come in different sizes, so do the filters. The filter sizes are measured in microns, with smaller micron measurements indicating smaller holes in the filter, capturing even the smallest particles.

Generally, for visibly polluted water containing larger particles, a sediment filter of a larger size (such as 20 or 50 microns) is recommended in the first stage to prevent clogging of subsequent filters.

This sediment filter is often the first installed in a Reverse Osmosis circuit, acting as a net to catch unwanted particles like sand, dirt, silt, rust, and other fine particles. Sediment filters are made of fine melted polypropylene, blown and spun into a cylinder shape. Polypropylene is resistant to chemical solvents, bases, and acids. Removing these particles allows other filters, such as Carbon Block or GAC (Granular Activated Carbon), to perform better and last longer.

The main difference between a Grooved Sediment Filter and a regular Sediment Filter is the surface area; the Grooved Sediment has a larger surface area, contributing to a longer life span and better filtration.
