The filter has tiny holes through which water can pass, while preventing unwanted particles from entering. Given that these particles come in different sizes, the filters are measured in microns, with smaller micron ratings corresponding to smaller holes that can capture finer particles.

For water that is visibly more polluted, containing larger particles, a sediment filter with a larger size (such as 20 or 50 microns) is recommended as the first stage of installation. This helps prevent the clogging of subsequent filter stages.

The sediment filter is often the first filter installed in a Reverse Osmosis circuit, acting as a net to catch unwanted particles, including sand, dirt, silt, rust, and other fine particles. The filter is made of fine melted polypropylene, which is then blown and spun into a cylinder-like form, making it resistant to chemical solvents, bases, and acids.
